Manoj Bajpayee’s Best Performances at a Glance
Ask 10 film fans for the Manoj Bajpayee best performances and you will get ten different lists. Ours weighs three things major awards, critical response and how much each role changed his career. It runs from gangsters and dacoits to a retired constable a suspended professor and a middle-class spy. A streaming table near the end shows where to watch each movies/webseries in India.
Who is Manoj Bajpayee?
Manoj Bajpayee was born on 23 April 1969 in a small village in West Champaran, Bihar, where his father farmed. He studied history at Delhi University’s Ramjas College and spent his early years in Delhi’s theatre circuit. Two tiny film appearances in 1994, in Drohkaal and Bandit Queen barely moved his career. Years of struggle in Mumbai followed.
How we ranked them
Every title went through a simple three-part test. Did the performance bring home a major award? Was it a massive hit with the critics? Did it completely redefine his career? In case of a tie, the win went to the role that is easier for audiences to stream today.
1. Satya (1998): Bhiku Mhatre
Everything Manoj Bajpayee became starts here. Ram Gopal Varma had noticed him in Bandit Queen and cast him in a small part in Daud, then promised him something bigger. That promise turned into Bhiku Mhatre, a Mumbai gang leader who cracks jokes and gives violent orders with the same ease.
Bajpayee says he was never offered the title role which went to J.D. Chakravarthy. He admits to some jealousy since only Chakravarthy’s face would fill the poster. He also says he pushed Varma to cast Shefali Shah as Bhiku’s wife. The shoot stalled for about a week after Gulshan Kumar’s murder until Varma found a financier.
The role won him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. Stardom did not bring steady work though. By his own account he sat idle for eight months and the offers that did arrive were mostly villains.
2. Aligarh (2016): Professor Ramchandra Siras
The film retells the real 2010 case of Professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, who was suspended from Aligarh Muslim University over his sexuality and was later found dead. Local resistance pushed the crew to shoot in Bareilly instead of Aligarh. Bajpayee credits casting director Mukesh Chhabra for pressing his name on director Hansal Mehta.
He has said he needed roughly two to three weeks to prepare and that loneliness was the hardest note to hit. The result leans on pauses rather than speeches. Rajkummar Rao plays the journalist who chases the story.
The performance won a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor and the Best Actor prize at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. If a friend asks where to start with Bajpayee we point them here.
3. Bhonsle (2018): Ganpat Bhonsle
Devashish Makhija’s film follows Ganpat Bhonsle, a retired police constable who lives alone and keeps to himself. His routine cracks when he befriends a young migrant girl and her brother amid rising hostility toward outsiders. Since Manoj Bajpayee co-produced the film himself it’s even cooler how completely grounded and subtle his performance is.
The role earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor at the 67th National Film Awards. Most viewers first met the film through its streaming premiere in June 2020.
4. Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 (2012): Sardar Khan
Anurag Kashyap’s coal-belt revenge saga debuted at Cannes in 2012. Bajpayee’s Sardar Khan became its swaggering centre. The character’s crude jokes and sudden menace produced lines that fans still quote and turn into memes.
One prominent critic called it his best work since Satya and it earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Actor. It sits fourth because the biggest trophies in his career went to other roles.
5. The Family Man (2019 onward): Srikant Tiwari
Raj & DK’s spy series gave Bajpayee his widest audience. Srikant Tiwari juggles two lives a special cell of the National Investigation Agency by day and a middle-class household at night with Priyamani playing his wife Suchitra. The third season arrived on 21 November 2025 after a four-year gap with Jaideep Ahlawat and Nimrat Kaur joining as new adversaries.
The role won him the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor. It reaches more people than anything else here, but its awards and critical weight sit a notch below the films above it.
6. Shool (1999): Inspector Samar Pratap Singh
Bajpayee plays Inspector Samar Pratap Singh an honest cop posted to Motihari in Bihar who refuses to look away from corruption. The role brought him a second Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. We read the anger as simmering frustration rather than showy outrage, which is why it still holds up.
7. Pinjar (2003): Rashid
Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s Partition drama adapts Amrita Pritam’s 1950 Punjabi novel. Bajpayee plays Rashid a man whose act of abduction upends the life of Puro, played by Urmila Matondkar. It is uncomfortable viewing and that discomfort is part of its power.
The National Film Awards gave him a Special Jury Award. The film itself won the award for Best Feature Film on National Integration.
8. Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai (2023)
This courtroom drama pits a lawyer against a powerful godman accused of assaulting a minor. The stakes are enormous, yet the lawyer Bajpayee plays stays modest and everyday. He never lets him turn into a superhero and that restraint makes the film work.
9. Joram (2023)
Makhija and Bajpayee reunite after Bhonsle for a chase thriller about a father who flees with his infant daughter. Festival audiences warmed to it. It shows an actor as comfortable with tenderness as with menace.
10. Sonchiriya (2019): Man Singh
Abhishek Chaubey’s Chambal Valley drama sends rival bandit gangs on a collision course. Bajpayee plays Man Singh a gang leader in a smaller part than most on this list. There is a nice symmetry here since he began his career as a dacoit named Man Singh in Bandit Queen.
Honourable mentions
Special 26 (2013), Kaun? (1999), Gulmohar (2023) and Inspector Zende (2025) just missed the list. Each shows a different side of his range.
