Sanjay Dutt Shekhar Tonite Munna Bhai: Peace, Politics and a Punchline
Sanjay Dutt slipped back into his most famous screen character for a Gandhi Jayanti special of Shekhar Suman’s Shekhar Tonite, released on October 2. The actor spent five minutes imagining himself as India’s Prime Minister, delivering the whole segment in his trademark Munna Bhai style.
Before the comedy sketch began, Dutt turned reflective about the country itself. He said the people of India remain wonderful, but added that he can’t feel the same peace in the nation that he once did, without specifying what had changed for him.
Why Munna Bhai Took Center Stage
Suman then asked Dutt to imagine holding the country’s top office for five minutes and address the nation directly. Dutt leaned straight into the role that made him a household name decades ago.
The character, created by director Rajkumar Hirani, first appeared in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. in 2003. Its sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, built an entire philosophy around nonviolent conflict resolution that fans still refer to as Gandhigiri.
Notably, that same philosophy ran through Dutt’s entire monologue on the show, tying the comedy segment directly back to the holiday being marked that day.
The Message for Donald Trump
Still fully in character, Sanjay Dutt turned his attention to US President Donald Trump partway through the sketch. He addressed him as “Trump mamu,” Mumbai slang that loosely translates to uncle, while poking fun at recent American tariffs.
He joked that if he were actually running the country, he’d personally travel to the US to teach Trump a lesson in Gandhigiri. His line summed up the whole bit – peace comes from love, and love comes from Gandhigiri.
Social Media Pushes Back on Dutt’s Peace Comment
Sanjay Dutt’s remark about not feeling peace in India has triggered sharp criticism online, separate from the lighter reaction to his Munna Bhai sketch. A number of users have brought up his 1996 conviction for illegally possessing an AK-56 rifle, tied to the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts that killed 257 people.
Several comments accused him of hypocrisy given that history. One widely shared reply read, “He was having an AK for his peace,” while another called him “shameless” for invoking the topic at all.
However, the reaction hasn’t been one-sided. Some users have defended Dutt’s right to express a personal opinion, pointing out that he served his sentence and was released in 2016.
This kind of backlash isn’t new for Sanjay Dutt his past has resurfaced during the Sanju biopic’s release and at other public moments over the years. What’s different this time is that the criticism is colliding with a comedy sketch rather than a serious interview, which seems to be amplifying the reaction further.
Dutt’s Life Between Mumbai and Dubai
Away from the sketch, Dutt also touched briefly on his own living situation. He holds a 10-year UAE Golden Visa and currently splits his time between Mumbai and Dubai, where his wife Maanayata and their twins, Shahraan and Iqra.
He also mentioned he wouldn’t be traveling abroad for any particular celebration this time, choosing instead to stay closer to home.
A Fresh Reason to Want Munna Bhai 3
The appearance has reignited longstanding fan interest in a third installment of the Munna Bhai franchise. Dutt last appeared on screen in the political drama Aakhri Sawal, released back in May.
Sanjay Dutt’s brief return to Munna Bhai has fans talking, and stirred up a genuine debate about his past in the process. Do you think his critics are being fair, or should the focus stay on the comedy itself? Tell us in the comments below.
