Kunal Khemu From Child Actor to Writer-Director
This Kunal Khemu profile traces a journey that started early. He was born on May 25, 1983, in Srinagar into a Kashmiri Pandit family already steeped in the arts.
His grandfather Moti Lal Kemmu was a celebrated Kashmiri playwright. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982 and the Padma Shri in 2012. Khemu’s own parents Ravi and Jyoti Kemmu were actors too.
Khemu stepped in front of the camera early, appearing as a child artist from the late 1980s onward. He later moved into adult lead roles building his breakout years on intense, character-driven films like Kalyug, where he shared the screen with Emraan Hashmi.
Family – A Marriage Into the Pataudis
Khemu married actress Soha Ali Khan on January 25, 2015, following an engagement in Paris the previous year. That union connected him to the Pataudi family one of Bollywood’s most recognized lineages.
Soha’s parents are cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actress Sharmila Tagore. Her brother Saif Ali Khan is married to Kareena Kapoor Khan which makes him Khemu’s brother-in-law too.
The couple’s daughter, Inaaya Naumi Khemu, arrived on September 29, 2017. Khemu and Soha come from different religious backgrounds. He’s spoken about raising Inaaya with an inclusive approach one that came naturally rather than through rigid planning.
Behind the Camera – Madgaon Express and Beyond
Khemu made his directorial debut with Madgaon Express in 2024, an ensemble comedy that won over audiences with its fresh, youthful energy. The film marked a real turning point in how the industry saw him not just a dependable actor but a filmmaker with a distinct comic voice.
He’s also spoken candidly about the modern film business. In his view it often runs on packaging and project strategy as much as creative merit, a view that seems to shape how deliberately he’s built his directorial slate since.
Vibe Movie His Second Film as Director
Khemu’s second directorial outing Vibe is a spin-off built around his own character from Madgaon Express. He wrote, produced, directed and stars in the film playing a character named Hardik.
The story follows Hardik’s close friend, Bugs, played by Sparsh Shrivastava. Bugs’s ordinary life spirals into danger once a mission involving terrorism pulls him in. Preity Zinta plays Madam H, a composed, authoritative figure who drags the pair deeper into the chaos. The film also marks a screen debut for Vanshika Dhir, while Yashpal Sharma and Dinesh Lal Yadav fill out the supporting cast.
Khemu produced Vibe with Chirag Nihalani under their banner Drongo Films with Amazon MGM Studios backing the release. It opened in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
Directing His Mother-in-Law
One of Vibe’s more personal threads involved casting his own mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore in a cameo role. Khemu called approaching her “a shot in the dark.”
He recalled simply putting the question to her whether she’d take on a small cameo part. He added that getting to call “action” and “cut” on a performer of her stature was something he never expected to tick off his list.
Preity Zinta meanwhile had her own light-hearted complaint about the shoot. She said Khemu didn’t give her enough funny scenes to work with despite the film’s comic tone.
What’s Next – Madgaon Express 2
Khemu had a sequel in mind even while writing the original Madgaon Express. He’s since confirmed that the script for Madgaon Express 2 is now complete.
No shoot timeline has been locked in yet. The confirmation alone has generated strong anticipation given how warmly the first film landed.
Fan speculation has also circulated about whether Khemu might direct a sequel to Go Goa Gone, the cult horror-comedy he starred in years earlier. That remains unconfirmed and appears to be fan interest rather than an active project at this stage.
Kunal Khemu’s path runs from child actor to a filmmaker who’s now directed his own mother-in-law. It reflects a broader shift among actors of his generation moving behind the camera. What are you most looking forward to Madgaon Express 2 or a potential Go Goa Gone return?
