Resident Evil is holding up well in India even past its opening weekend, with growth on weekday shows pushing the film past the Rs 11 crore mark. The Zach Cregger reboot has also become the biggest opener in the franchise’s 24-year history worldwide.
Fans are showing up in solid numbers for a horror reboot with no big Bollywood star attached. Here’s how the numbers stack up.
Resident Evil Box Office Collection in India
The film has picked up pace on weekdays rather than fading, which is unusual for a Hollywood release in India. Trade estimates put its second Tuesday collection up by double digits over the previous day.
Consequently, the India net total has now crossed Rs 11 crore, with the gross figure running higher still. Some trade trackers put the five-day gross closer to Rs 15 crore once all formats are included.
However, these are early trade estimates, and different trackers report slightly different figures at this stage.
Why Resident Evil Is Outperforming Expectations
This reboot arrived with modest expectations after 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City flopped badly. That film opened to just over $5 million domestically and $42 million worldwide.
This time, the result is completely different. The film opened to $60 million domestically, making it the biggest debut the franchise has ever had in the US.
Globally, the opening weekend hit $108.3 million. Notably, that beats the entire lifetime worldwide total of the original 2002 Resident Evil film, which finished its run at $102.9 million.
A Personal Record for Zach Cregger
The film also marks director Zach Cregger’s biggest opening yet. It comfortably beats the $70 million worldwide debut of his previous film, Weapons.
Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten and reunited with Weapons actor Austin Abrams for the lead role.
Meanwhile, strong reviews and word of mouth are being credited for the film’s overperformance. Trade watchers had expected a domestic opening in the $40-50 million range before it actually opened.
Meet the Cast: Who’s Behind the Outbreak
Zach Cherry plays a key supporting role, and horror fans may recognise him from the hit series Severance, which brings some prestige-TV crossover appeal to the film. Kali Reis, a former professional boxer turned actor, broke through with her role in True Detective Night Country.
This ensemble leans more character-driven than the earlier Milla Jovovich-led films, which were built around one action lead. That shift in casting style mirrors Cregger’s own background in grounded, character-first horror, seen earlier in Barbarian and Weapons.
From Video Game to Screen: A Fresh Take on the Franchise
Resident Evil began life as a Capcom survival-horror video game in 1996, and this marks the eighth film to carry the name. Unlike the earlier six films, this version drops Alice’s storyline entirely and starts fresh.
The new story follows Bryan, a medical courier who gets pulled into a monster outbreak in Raccoon City, closer in tone to the original games than the more action-heavy earlier films. Early reviews have pointed to this tonal shift as a key reason the reboot is connecting with both longtime fans and newer horror audiences.
Where It Stands in the Franchise
This marks the second attempt at rebooting the series after the Jovovich era ended. The series’ all-time highest grosser remains 2016’s Resident Evil. The Final Chapter, at $312 million worldwide, more than half of it from China.
This new film still has several major markets left to open, including Japan and China. If the current pace holds, trade watchers expect it to challenge that all-time franchise record.
