Karan Johar RN Kao Film Latest Update
Karan Johar has finally pinned down when his next big project will hit theatres. The film, built around R&AW founder Rameshwar Nath Kao, is set for August 11, 2028. Dharma Productions announced it to mark 58 years since the agency’s founding.
The project was first announced back in January 2020, and it has taken six years to get a date.
Karan Johar RN Kao Film – What We Know So Far
Dharma Productions is making the film with Leo Media Collective. It chronicles the life of Rameshwar Nath Kao, who founded India’s external intelligence agency in 1968.
The story spans 1955 to 1971. It builds up to R&AW’s first major mission and the 1971 war against Pakistan.
Notably, the release date falls on the Independence Day weekend. That timing fits the film’s patriotic, espionage theme.
Karan Johar’s Announcement – He Built the Invisible
Karan shared the news on Instagram with a striking caption. “built the invisible… but history remembers his impact.”
He timed the reveal deliberately, tying it to a milestone year for the agency. Today marks 58 years of R&AW and we’re thrilled to announce our film on the story of RN Kao. The man who operated in the shadows & brought to light an institution we know today as R&AW.
However, Karan kept some details close to the chest. He confirmed only the release date and the source book in his post.
The Book Behind the Film – Gentleman Spymaster
The film draws from Nitin Gokhale’s book Gentleman Spymaster. It traces Kao’s journey from a quiet officer to the architect of India’s spy agency.
Karan described the two-year development process. Leo Media has painstakingly been researching and dramatizing this narrative with passion for the past two years, he said, adding that the team wants a gripping story based on true facts.
Meanwhile, the production team includes Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta and Amritpal Singh Bindra. The film remains untitled for now.
Cast, Director and Production Timeline
The film has no confirmed cast or director yet. However, sources close to the project say an A-lister will lead it.
Reports also say Hrithik Roshan was approached for the role earlier. That casting is not confirmed, so treat it as a reported lead only.
Cameras are expected to start rolling sometime around the middle of 2026. Consequently, casting news should emerge over the coming months.
Karan Johar’s Growing Spy and War Drama Slate
This project extends a genre Karan Johar has backed before. He has produced Raazi, Shershaah, Kesari and Kesari: Chapter 2, all rooted in real events and intelligence themes.
Both Raazi and Shershaah won the Filmfare Award for Best Film. Consequently, expectations for the Kao film are already high.
Still two years to go, this project has time to build serious buzz, especially once casting news drops.
